*SCANDAL – TOP UNIVERSITIES TOOK BILLIONS IN UNREPORTED FOREIGN FUNDS, U.S. FINDS:

Cornell University initially failed to report to U.S. authorities more than $1.2 billion in foreign funds it has received in recent years, including $760 million related to its campus in Qatar and about $1 million in contracts from Chinese telecom company Huawei Technologies Co., the U.S. Education Department said. Georgetown University has worked with the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, deriving more than $2 million from a related arrangement, and supporting an academic exchange with Communist officials through the central committee’s Party School, the department also said in a recent report.

The names of the universities are redacted but identifiable based on other details provided in the report and related correspondence by the department with the schools. The 34-page report provides an update to a broad investigation the Education Department undertook last year into whether U.S. universities are appropriately reporting all foreign contracts and gifts that total more than $250,000 in one year. It isn’t illegal to take such funds, but universities are obligated to disclose them under a statute that is decades old but hasn’t been vigorously enforced in past years.

The department said Tuesday it planned to condition access to participation in federal student-loan programs on compliance with foreign-funding obligations. The government has expressed concern that foreign money may come with strings attached, provide foreign governments improper access to sensitive research or limit academic freedom in some programs. “U.S. institutions are technological treasure troves where leading and internationally competitive fields, such as nanoscience, are booming. For too long, these institutions have provided an unprecedented level of access to foreign governments and their instrumentalities in an environment lacking transparency and oversight by the industry, the Department, and our partner agencies,” the Education Department said in its report.

*MOUTHWASH, BABY SHAMPOO DEACTIVATE CORONAVIRUS, MAY SLOW SPREAD OF COVID-19:
 

As the world waits for a vaccine to COVID-19, a new study finds there may be a way to slow the spread sitting in your medicine cabinet. Researchers from Penn State College of Medicine say nasal and oral rinses like mouthwash can deactivate human coronaviruses. Their study finds these common, over-the-counter products should have the same effect on SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. The group tested various products including one-percent baby shampoo, a neti pot, peroxide sore-mouth cleansers, and mouthwash, seeing how each would lower the viral load of coronavirus strains in a patient’s mouth. Their findings reveal most of these products effectively shut down virus particles in less than two minutes. Researchers hope they may also lower the chances of COVID infection among people carrying the virus.“While we wait for a vaccine to be developed, methods to reduce transmission are needed,” says Craig Meyers, distinguished professor of microbiology, immunology, obstetrics, and gynecology in a university release. “The products we tested are readily available and often already part of people’s daily routines.”

Meyers and his team replicated the reaction between virus cells in mouths and noses when they encounter rinses and mouthwashes. Health officials say these are the two major points where COVID-19 enters and exits the body, which explains the emphasis on face mask protection. Researchers introduced their virus solutions to all of the cleansing products for 30 seconds, one minute, and two minutes. Meyers explains that the outer envelope of their viruses and SARS-CoV-2 are so genetically similar that the results should mean COVID-19 would become inactive after exposure to rinses as well. The results reveal one-percent baby shampoo solution deactivated more than 99.9 percent of human coronaviruses after two minutes of contact. Researchers say doctors, who regularly have contact with infected patients, often use baby shampoo to rinse out their sinuses. Even better, the results find several mouthwash and gargling products leave 99.9 percent of coronaviruses inactive after just 30 seconds. Some of these rinses stopped 99.99 percent of coronavirus.

“People who test positive for COVID-19 and return home to quarantine may possibly transmit the virus to those they live with,” Meyers adds. “Certain professions including dentists and other health care workers are at a constant risk of exposure. Clinical trials are needed to determine if these products can reduce the amount of virus COVID-positive patients or those with high-risk occupations may spread while talking, coughing or sneezing. Even if the use of these solutions could reduce transmission by 50%, it would have a major impact.”Researchers will now be looking to expand their study to clinical trials involving COVID-19-positive patients.

*U.S. HITS A MILLION AIR PASSENGERS A DAY FOR FIRST TIME IN SEVEN MONTHS:

  The TSA announced Monday morning that for the first time since March 16, the U.S. had more than a million air passengers a day. Historically, airports saw between 2 and 2.5 million passengers coming through each day. Numbers plummeted in April to below 100,000 and stayed in the low 100,000s in May. The aviation industry got hopeful in June as the numbers slowly ticked back up to half a million, but as more waves of coronavirus outbreaks hit over the summer, numbers remained around half a million, occasionally ticking up on holiday weekends.

*WATCHING NATURE SHOWS ON TV CAN CURE BOREDOM:

It’s fair to say the coronavirus pandemic has turned many people into TV binge watchers in 2020. For some people however, isolation is leaving them bored and depressed no matter what’s on television. A new study finds there may be a way to cure this boredom and get back in touch with nature, without leaving your couch. Researchers at the University of Exeter find that watching nature programming actually reduces feelings of boredom and sadness.The study examined 96 participants who researchers actively tried to bore before their experiments. To accomplish this, the volunteers watched a video where a person described their work at an office supply company.

After being sufficiently fatigued by this dull tale, researchers showed the group scenes of an underwater coral reef. Participants watched these scenes either on television, in a virtual reality headset using 360-degree video, or a VR headset using computer-generated graphics. The results reveal all three formats minimized the feeling of sadness in each volunteer. Each viewing option also significantly reduced boredom. With so many people working from home due to social distancing restrictions, study authors say this could have positive therapeutic effects.“Our results show that simply watching nature on TV can help to lift people’s mood and combat boredom. With people around the world facing limited access to outdoor environments because of COVID-19 quarantines, this study suggests that nature programs might offer an accessible way for populations to benefit from a ‘dose’ of digital nature,” lead researcher Nicky Yeo says in a university release.

California has suffered five of the six largest wildfires in recorded state history in recent weeks — including a “gigafire,” the August Complex Fire, which has already burned more than 1 million acres. Those displaced by the infernos were left to pick their lives up and put them back together. Unfortunately, several of those lives lost not only included the homeowners, but the first responding firefighters as well. Thirty-one deaths have been attributed to California wildfires since August — four firefighters and 27 other people overtaken by the flames. To combat and help aid those firefighters, the LAFD has unveiled the new firefighting robot, RS3. Robert Kerbeck, acclaimed author and recipient of a 2020 Readers’ Favorite Award as the Silver Medalist in Nonfiction for his book, “Malibu Burning: The Real Story Behind LA’s Most Devastating Wildfire”, offers his views on the extraordinary achievement and technical development.

Last week, the LAFD became the first fire department in the nation to acquire the Robotics Systems 3, a droid on steroids. The Best of Los Angeles Award-winning author who wrote about the power of ordinary citizens working diligently to help each other create resilience, healing, and re-building, as a response to the Woolsey fire in 2018, states, “If drones can fight wars, why not use them to fight fires? That’s the idea behind the LA Fire Department’s first firefighting drone, Robotics Systems 3, or RS3 for short”. This year, 11 LAFD crew members were severely injured when a fireball engulfed four downtown buildings after a massive explosion that was ignited by hazardous materials. Kerbeck states, “Now, firefighters can use RS3 as a safer alternative in battling potentially explosive blazes and it allows the department to get inside a burning building when humans could not dare enter safely.”

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas says that while he can afford to lose one of these wonderful machines, he cannot afford to lose a firefighter. Such technical advances will make enormous improvements and with multiple cameras and even infrared, states Robert, it will be able to locate the source of flames or even a trapped person. Although California has had a tragic year, innovations such as these will only ensure that our first responders function better and safer in the future. Kerbeck concludes by praising the LAFD and stating, “I’m proud of the LA Fire Department for embracing this technology!”

*DISASTER – VIEWERSHIP FOR NBA FINALS FINALE CRASHES NEARLY 70%

On a night when the NBA broadcast its most important game, you would think that the league would own the night. That, once again, turned out to not be the case. The viewership numbers for the sixth and final game of the NBA Finals are in, and they are atrocious. Game 6 drew, at its peak, 6.028 million viewers. To put that in perspective, Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, which included a team from Canada and did not include LeBron James, drew 18.34 million viewers. Those figures represent a 66 percent drop. The heavy viewership losses are consistent with disastrous viewership numbers from the first half of the series when games one through three drew consecutive, historically low numbers. Indeed, the low numbers are consistent with an entire season of bad television viewership performances. The NBA restarted its season, after a five-month hiatus due to the coronavirus, by making social justice messaging and imagery a centerpiece of their television broadcasts. That messaging was greeted with historic drops in ratings, drops largely due to fan dissatisfaction with the overtly political nature of the games.

*NEVER ENDING – STATUES OF LINCOLN AND ROOSEVELT PULLED DOWN WITH CHAINS IN PORTLAND:

Two statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt in Portland, Oregon, have suffered a now-familiar fate after being torn down by protesters late Sunday night and daubed in red paint. According to KATU News, a gathering of protesters in the southwest of the city was declared a riot by police after the statues were targeted. Earlier in the night, Portland Police said protesters had been caught trying to pull down a statue with a chain, and warned that they would use tear gas and “impact weapons” if the gathering didn’t disperse. The warning apparently fell on deaf ears as police later declared a riot, and photos published by KATU showed that the two statues had been pulled to the ground.

*NYT’S BRET STEPHENS TORCHES COLLEAGUE NIKOLE HANNAH-JONES’ ‘FAILED’ 1619 PROJECT

New York Times opinion writer Bret Stephens criticized colleague and racial injustice reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones’ landmark 1619 Project in his latest column, saying that points made within it were “illogical.” The project argues for readers to reimagine 1619 as the country’s birth year rather than 1776 due to the contributions made by slaves. Stephens argues that the impact of decisions made in 1776 outweighed those of 1619. While praising the project’s ambition, he wrote that “for all of its virtues, buzz, spinoffs and a Pulitzer Prize…the 1619 Project has failed.”

“It [the project] issued categorical and totalizing assertions that are difficult to defend on close examination,” Stephens wrote. “Virtually every writer in the project seems to sing from the same song sheet, alienating other potential supporters of the project and polarizing national debate.” Stephens mentions other critics’ issues with the project’s transparency, objectivity, and accuracy. Hannah-Jones pushed back on Stephens’ criticism, arguing that the case for making 1619 the country’s “true” birth was “always a metaphoric argument” and not intended to be taught to students.

As we age, the countless cells and neurons in our brains can come under attack from harmful tangles and plaque build-ups. This interference is the common cause of dementia, which destroys the memory and thinking abilities of many seniors. While scientists continue to work on treatments for dementia, a new study finds your personality may be the best weapon you have. Researchers at Northwestern University say anxious and moody people are more susceptible to the affects of brain damage later in life. A review of patient brains donated to science finds certain people can still function at a high level despite having the same neuropathology of someone suffering from cognitive decline. Reviewing annual psychosocial surveys these patients took before their deaths, researchers discovered individuals with a greater tendency for self-discipline, organization, diligence, high achievement, and motivation fight off the causes of dementia better than others.

This personality, known as having a high level of conscientiousness, shows a link to better resilience against memory and thinking problems. On the other hand, patients who experience anxiety, moodiness, impulsivity, and generally worry more have less cognitive function before their deaths. “These findings provide evidence that it is possible for older adults to live with the neuropathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias while maintaining relatively healthy levels of cognitive function,” lead study author Eileen Graham says.

*KENTUCKY MAN FOUND GUILTY OF CANNIBALISM MURDER:
 

A Kentucky man was convicted Friday in the horrifying cannibalism murder of his ex-girlfriend, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. Joseph Oberhansley now faces life in prison for stabbing Tammy Jo Blanton, dismembering her, and eating part of her organs six years ago. When he was found in the Jeffersonville house, Blanton’s body was in the tub and her skull and bones were on a plate near a frying pan. Oberhansley initially confessed—then rejected an insanity defense and claimed at trial that two intruders were responsible.

Do you ever wonder how that giant bag of popcorn is empty by the end of the movie? A recent study finds snackers have a hard time realizing they’re full and wind up overeating while focusing on other things. Researchers say the more our brains lock in on something, especially watching television, the less it’s able to tell when we should stop eating. The findings offer a clear strategy when it comes to snacking while watching TV: limit yourself to a healthy portion. Trusting our gut, in this case, to tell us when to stop simply won’t do us any good. And it’s not just television that’s the culprit. Any activity that engages us will take our mind off our appetite, the study shows.

The study by the University of Sussex examines 120 people, giving them low or high-calorie drinks while completing various perceptually-demanding tasks. The British team reveals activities which require lots of attention trick many participants into overeating, even if their drink was more filling. Those engaging in highly-demanding tasks ate the same amount of snacks after their test, regardless of having low or high-calorie drinks before eating. Participants doing less-engaging activities however, are able to tell when they’ve had enough snacks.

*WOKE – PINTEREST LIMITING SEARCH RESULTS FOR CULTURALLY INAPPROPRIATE HALLOWEEN IDEAS:

Social media platform Pinterest announced that it would be limiting recommendations for Halloween costumes that could be considered culturally insensitive. The photo-sharing company issued a statement on its website announcing the move, adding that it would be prohibiting “advertisements with culturally inappropriate costumes, and make it possible for Pinners to report culturally-insensitive content right from Pins.” The platform also said that certain searches, including “Day of the Dead costumes,” will lead users to information developed by experts and Pinterest employee group PIndigenous “on how to celebrate thoughtfully and respectfully.”

*NEO-NAZI NORDIC RESISTANCE MOVEMENT TARGETS JEWS ON YOM KIPPUR:

The Neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement targeted Jews in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland with antisemitic campaigns throughout the week leading up to Yom Kippur – the holiest day in the Hebrew calendar. Websites belonging to the neo-Nazi movement reported actions taken by the group in almost 20 different cities. Pictures allegedly showing the actions taken by the group show members confronting Jewish worshipers and standing in front of synagogues, antisemitic posters placed in public areas and flyer distributions in public areas. The movement wrote that it was choosing on Yom Kippur to “make the Nordic people aware of foreign customs and Zionist ruling plans throughout the Nordic region,” with posters displayed in multiple countries attacking kosher slaughter, circumcision and the custom of kaparot.

*NYC VOTERS GET ABSENTEE BALLOT ENVELOPES WITH WRONG NAMES:

  The New York City Board of Elections is blaming an outside contractor for a debacle with some absentee ballots. An unknown number of Brooklyn residents received “oath envelopes” with someone else’s name and address on them. Voters are supposed to place their completed ballot in those envelopes and seal and sign them before mailing them back or dropping them off. But signing an envelope with the wrong name would render the ballot invalid, Gothamist reports. The Board of Elections says Phoenix Graphics, the vendor that printed the ballots and envelopes, is responsible for the mistake. “We will ensure on behalf of the voters in Brooklyn that the proper ballots and ballot envelopes are in the hands of the voters in advance of Election Day so they can vote,” Executive Director Michael Ryan told Gothamist. “This problem will get corrected.”

*’NO TIME TO DIE’ DELAYED TO EASTER WEEKEND 2021 AS PANDEMIC TAKES A GRIP AT BOX OFFICE:

MGM’s No Time to Die is officially heading to April 2, Easter weekend, and vacating its November 20 release date. Interestingly enough, this puts the James Bond film starring Daniel Craig on the same weekend with Universal’sF9. I hear that the latter is bound to move. Universal is providing no comment on that release date change. UPDATE: The F9 release date indeed has changed..
  “MGM, Universal and Bond producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, today announced the release of No Time To Die, the 25^th film in the James Bond series, will be delayed until 2 April in order to be seen by a worldwide theatrical audience.  We understand the delay will be disappointing to our fans but we now look forward to sharing No Time To Die next year,” said the studio in a statement. MGM was the first studio to foresee how the pandemic was going to stall exhibition, and jumped No Time to Die from its Easter weekend release date of April 10-12 to the Thanksgiving frame. 

*YIKES!- AVERAGE PARENT IS NO BETTER AT MATH OR SCIENCE THAN A 6TH GRADER:

How many of your childhood math or science lessons do you remember today? If the answer is barely any, you aren’t alone. A recent survey of 2,000 U.S. parents finds the average parent these days has the math and science skills of an 11-year-old. Respondents were asked what grade they would be placed in today if they had to take a placement test, and the average answer was sixth grade for both math and science. It’s unrealistic to expect anyone to remember everything they were taught in school as a child, of course. Yet the extent to which many American adults feel clueless when it comes to academics is shocking. In all, 42% say they would be “lost” trying to teach their child mathematics. Another 35% express the same sentiment regarding scientific topics.

*GAYS, LESBIANS, AND BISEXUALS AT HIGHER MIGRAINE RISK, STUDY FINDS:

Sexual minorities are significantly more likely to experience migraines than heterosexuals, according to a new report suggesting minority stress and discrimination may be the culprit. Researchers interviewed more than 9,800 adults from the ages of 31 to 42 as part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. “We know stress in general can trigger migraines, and since sexual minorities experience discrimination and added stress, it seems logical that could trigger migraines.”

Just over 85 percent of respondents identified as exclusively heterosexual, 10 percent were “mostly” heterosexual but somewhat attracted to the same sex and about 4 percent identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual. (The survey did not encompass gender identity.) Gay, lesbian and bisexual participants had 58 percent higher odds of a migraine than their strictly heterosexual counterparts. The “mostly straight” participants had an increased rate of migraines equal to other sexual minorities. Migraine headaches often produce an intense throbbing pain on one side of the head, though both sides can be affected. They can last hours or even days and be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and a sensitivity to light, sound or other sensory input.

*NEW JERSEY WOMAN GAVE UP HER SON FOR ADOPTION, THEN USED HIS ‘DEATH’ FOR BOGUS GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN

A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges after prosecutors say she tried to dupe the public out of thousands of dollars with a GoFundMe campaign seeking donations for her dead son’s funeral—the same son she’d actually given up for adoption. Holly Garcia, 33, was taken into custody in late September and now faces charges of computer criminal activity and attempted theft by deception, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement Wednesday. Garcia wound up on police radar in June after a couple who had adopted her 4-year-old son alerted authorities to a GoFundMe campaign using his photo to seek $5,000 in funeral expenses after he had supposedly died of cancer, authorities said.

She is said to have created a slew of other fundraising campaigns, including one seeking assistance to care for her toddler son who was going blind in one eye, and another seeking money to buy an urn for her dead son’s ashes. Prosecutors say GoFundMe caught wind of the schemes before she could collect any of the donations. She made her first appearance in court last week and now faces possible indictment by a grand jury.
