GROWING SHARE OF CHILDLESS ADULTS IN U.S. DON’T EXPECT TO EVER HAVE CHILDREN:

Birth rates in the United States dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic amid the twin public health and economic crises, lending evidence to predictions from early on in the outbreak that economic uncertainty might trigger a baby bust. This continued the downward trend in U.S. fertility rates, which were already at a record low before the pandemic began. A new Pew Research Center survey finds that a rising share of U.S. adults who are not already parents say they are unlikely to ever have children, and their reasons range from just not wanting to have kids to concerns about climate change and the environment. Some 44% of non-parents ages 18 to 49 say it is not too or not at all likely that they will have children someday, an increase of 7 percentage points from the 37% who said the same in a 2018 survey. Meanwhile, 74% of adults younger than 50 who are already parents say they are unlikely to have more kids, virtually unchanged since 2018.

Cancer Mortality Falls:

Deaths from all types of cancer in the U.S. fell by an estimated 27% over the past 50 years, according to a new analysis. The timeframe reaches back to the passage of the 1971 National Cancer Act, now responsible for more than $6B in annual cancer research. Progress was attributed to improved preventative screenings, advanced treatments, better healthcare access, and drops in smoking-related lung and oral cancers.

Rates did not drop continuously throughout the timeframe. Cancer mortality continued to rise until the early 1990s, after which it began to rapidly decline. Deaths per 100,000 people in the U.S. have fallen by 44% since its peak. Lung and bronchus cancer remains the deadliest form of the disease, representing more than one in five U.S. cancer deaths each year. Cancer still claims the lives of more than 600,000 Americans annually.

North Korea’s Nuclear Bomb Capability Far Higher Than Previously Known, Satellite Image Analysis Suggests:

A new report out Thursday appears to show that North Korea has a far stronger nuclear-bomb-making capability than previously thought, The Wall Street Journal reports. An analysis by Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation suggests that Kim Jong Un has the potential to enrich more uranium and other base ingredients for deadly weapons than was previously known. The research group based its findings on satellite imagery analysis of a uranium mining complex in Pyongsan county. Researchers also analyzed deforestation levels to ascertain mining activity. Previous estimates of North Korea’s annual uranium ore output came in at around 30,000 metric tons; the new analysis shows it could actually be as much as 360,000 metric tons.

In Taliban-Ruled Afghanistan, Infant Girls Offered for Future Marriage Amid Economic Crisis:

The last time the Taliban ruled most of Afghanistan, rates of child marriages were among the world’s highest, and amid a deepening economic crisis, the United Nations’ children’s agency is concerned that the numbers are likely to rise once again. “We have received credible reports of families offering daughters as young as 20 days old up for future marriage in return for a dowry,” UNICEF executive director Henrietta Fore said. “The extremely dire economic situation in Afghanistan is pushing more families deeper into poverty and forcing them to make desperate choices, such as putting children to work and marrying girls off at a young age,” she said. The UN has warned that Afghanistan is on the brink of the world’s most serious humanitarian crisis, with 23 million of its 38 million people unlikely to have sufficient food through the coming winter without assistance.

Texas School Board Meeting Erupts After Pro-CRT Speaker Warns Parents He’s Got 1,000 Soldiers ‘Locked And Loaded’:

A pro-Critical Race Theory parent told attendees at a Texas school board meeting that he has 1,000 soldiers “locked and loaded” for those who “dare” question the need for race-based curricula. Malikk Austin turned to address parents who had expressed their discontent over Critical Race Theory (CRT) pedagogy being taught in the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) during the public comment portion of the meeting, according to video footage of the incident. “For those who got an issue with this critical race theory, equity it’s something I fought for for my children,” Austin said to meeting attendees. “How dare you come out from here and talk about the things that my daddy and my grandparents went through, the lynching, the oppression, Jim Crow. My kids are still being afflicted by this. How dare you come off in here and challenge me on critical race theory.” CRT holds that America is fundamentally racist, yet it teaches people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race. Its adherents pursue “antiracism” through the end of merit, objective truth and the adoption of race-based policies.

Stress Over Vaccination Seen as Main Cause of Side Effects:

Anxiety over the vaccination itself is believed to be the cause of the vast majority of side effects experienced among those vaccinated against the novel coronavirus at a mass vaccination site in Tokyo, an analysis by the Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital has found. About 90% of the acute-phase side effects experienced by 2,930 people after receiving the vaccine at the Defense Ministry-administered vaccination site were believed to stem from stress accompanying anxiety over the vaccination. Those in younger age group made up the largest share of those affected.

Man, 83, Acquitted of Wife’s Murder – After Serving 45 Years:

When Isiah Andrews was first tried for the 1974 stabbing murder of his wife, a Cleveland jury was not told that police had originally arrested another man for the crime. Andrews was convicted and served 45 years in prison, always maintaining his innocence, until an appeals court last year ordered him retried because of prosecutors’ failure to disclose key details. A jury that had all the facts acquitted Andrews, News5 Cleveland reported. “Today the jury got it right,” his lawyer, Marcus Sidoti, said. “He is finally vindicated. Isiah will never get these decades of his life back, but he can now live the remainder of his life a free man.”

•• In a recent essay on great-power competition and climate change, Rob Litwak, an arms control expert at the Wilson Center, recalled a question that President Ronald Reagan posed to Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet leader, after they took a walk during their 1985 Lake Geneva summit. As Gorbachev put it later: “President Reagan suddenly said to me, ‘What would you do if the United States were suddenly attacked by someone from outer space? Would you help us?’ I said, ‘No doubt about it.’ He said, ‘We too.’ So that’s interesting,” Gorbachev concluded. —- Thomas L. Friedman, New York Times Op-Ed columnist

** “Russia’s and China’s positions in the world economy have been reversed since they implemented different modes of marketization. Russia’s share of world G.D.P. almost halved, from 3.7% in 1990 to about 2% in 2017, while China’s share increased close to sixfold, from a mere 2.2% to about one-eighth of global output. Russia underwent dramatic deindustrialization, while China became the proverbial workshop of world capitalism.” —- Isabella M. Weber, “How China Escaped Shock Therapy: The Market Reform Debate” (2021)

** So much is broken in America. But higher education might be the most fractured institution of all. There is a gaping chasm between the promise and the reality of higher education. Yale’s motto is Lux et Veritas, light and truth. Harvard proclaims: Veritas. Young men and women of Stanford are told Die Luft der Freiheit weht: The wind of freedom blows. These are soaring words. But in these top schools, and in so many others, can we actually claim that the pursuit of truth – once the central purpose of a university – remains the highest virtue? Do we honestly believe that the crucial means to that end – freedom of inquiry and civil discourse – prevail when illiberalism has become a pervasive feature of campus life? The numbers tell the story as well as any anecdote you’ve read in the headlines or heard within your own circles. Nearly a quarter of American academics in the social sciences or humanities endorse ousting a colleague for having a wrong opinion about hot-button issues such as immigration or gender differences. Over a third of conservative academics and PhD students say they had been threatened with disciplinary action for their views. Four out of five American PhD students are willing to discriminate against right-leaning scholars, according to a report by the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology. The picture among undergraduates is even bleaker. In Heterodox Academy’s 2020 Campus Expression Survey, 62% of sampled college students agreed that the climate on their campus prevented students from saying things they believe. Nearly 70% of students favor reporting professors if the professor says something students find offensive, according to a Challey Institute for Global Innovation survey. Mobile Cannabis Dispensaries are Coming:

Californians who enjoy cannabis may no longer have to go to the dispensary. Instead, the dispensary will come to them. Once-illegal cannabis sure has come a long way. In 2020, weed sales were worth $4.4B in California alone, an increase of 57% from 2019. And it’s never been easier to get. Instead of covert cash sales, many patients and recreational consumers can now get it delivered straight to their door – which 60% of them did in 2021, per WeedMaps.

But can it get even easier than that? Typically, ordering cannabis would mean choosing items from a local dispensary’s online shop, then waiting for someone to drop it off. But this can take a while, especially if the nearest dispensary isn’t close by. Bay Area startup Meadow provides POS systems specifically for cannabis retailers, processing $1B+ in sales since 2014. Its “dynamic delivery” offers the tools for faster on-demand, mobile delivery, per TechCrunch. It can:

  • Dispatch drivers
  • Manage real-time inventory
  • Process payments
  • Help ensure compliance with local laws

Delivery vans can carry up to $3K in merchandise, per California law, or $5K if preorders are included. Meadow can also set up specific zones to vend near (e.g., near events or neighborhoods without dispensaries), and send notifications and discounts to customers within those zones. Stuff like this may be fun for recreational consumers, but will be greatly appreciated by medical cannabis patients who can’t easily leave their homes or travel far. Meadow is starting with California, but may also expand to Michigan, Massachusetts, and New York.

Myocarditis is Often Mild, Contrary to Online Claims

CLAIM: Myocarditis causes irreversible damage to the heart. Within five years of diagnosis, the death rate from myocarditis is 50%.

THE FACTS: Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, is a mild, temporary condition in the vast majority of cases, according to experts. Some social media users have been falsely claiming otherwise in recent weeks by misrepresenting the scientific literature on the condition. “Myocarditis is irreversible. Once the heart muscle is damaged, it cannot be repaired by the body,” states one widely shared Facebook post. “Myocarditis has a 20% fatality rate after 2 years and a 50% fatality rate after 5 years,” it continues. The Facebook post shows a screenshot of a blog post written by Edward Hendrie that included false claims about risks associated with COVID-19 vaccines. Hendrie told The Associated Press his statistics around myocarditis came from an academic article co-authored by Dr. Michael Kang, health sciences assistant clinical professor at University of California Riverside School of Medicine. Kang, contacted by the AP, said Hendrie was misrepresenting the figures used in his article, which was published in October 2017, well before the COVID-19 pandemic. It was written “as a general review of viral myocarditis and does not pertain to vaccine induced myocarditis,” Kang said. With regards to the myocarditis death rate, Kang said his article was referencing the most severe forms of myocarditis. Those numbers pertain to smaller, older studies, in which patients had extreme forms of the disease, “not what we are seeing with the COVID-19 vaccine,” Kang said in an email. A majority of individuals with myocarditis – about 70% – have no symptoms or mild symptoms that resolve completely, said Dr. Eric Adler, professor at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine who specializes in advanced heart failure. “The majority of myocarditis is mild and indeed reversible,” Adler said. Dr. Leslie Cooper, chair of the Mayo Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in Florida, agreed. “Myocarditis by definition is inflammation, which is usually reversible,” Cooper said. “Myocarditis can lead to ‘irreversible’ scarring but only in a minority of overall cases,” Cooper added. But Adler said there are treatment options that can help recover heart tissue even in severe cases. Very rarely, teens and young adults given the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines have experienced myocarditis. The condition has mostly affected young men and teen boys, and they tend to recover quickly. After intense scrutiny, U.S. health authorities concluded the vaccine’s benefits outweigh that small risk, the AP reported. “The facts are clear: this is an extremely rare side effect, and only an exceedingly small number of people will experience it after vaccination. Importantly, for the young people who do, most cases are mild, and individuals recover often on their own or with minimal treatment,” read a statement issued last June by top U.S. government health officials, medical organizations, laboratory and hospital associations.

Social Media Posts Misrepresent Reason for Blurred Presidential Seal

CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris’ Twitter account blurred the presidential seal on President Joe Biden’s desk in a recent video because Biden isn’t really the president.

THE FACTS: A video of Biden signing the $1 trillion “Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” was first posted by the Democratic National Committee, which intentionally blurred the seal to avoid conflicting with a federal statute that limits how individuals can use the seal, according to DNC Deputy Communications Director Daniel Wessel. Harris’ personal Twitter account re-shared the video on Tuesday. The video fueled a flurry of conspiracy theories on social media, with numerous Twitter users falsely claiming the blurred seal must mean Biden is not the legitimate U.S. president. The federal statute, U.S. Code 713, says the presidential seal can only be used for official government business. Though legal experts disagree on the boundaries of appropriate use in accordance with the law, it’s become common practice for candidates and political parties to blur the presidential seal in campaign-related posts and on campaign accounts, according to Jordan Libowitz, communications director for the nonpartisan watchdog group Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington. The DNC has blurred the presidential seal in other recent Twitter posts, including in a video on November 6 that Biden’s personal Twitter account re-shared. Former President Donald Trump also has shared videos with the seal blurred when using the posts for campaign purposes. The Trump Organization faced criticism in 2018 when replicas of the seal were displayed at one of its golf courses, violating federal law. The club removed the replicas and explained they had been gifts from members. Some social media users sharing Harris’ post also pointed to a woman seen clapping behind Biden in the video. Hundreds of Twitter users falsely claimed the woman’s rapidly moving hands appeared to go “through” Biden’s face. The Associated Press closely reviewed multiple versions of the video and found no such glitch or oddity. While Harris’ clapping hands in the video cast a shadow on the front of Biden’s face, the woman behind him remained behind him for the entire clip.

Pfizer CEO’s Wife did not Die or Experience ‘Vaccine Complications’

CLAIM: Myriam Bourla, the wife of Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, has died from complications of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

THE FACTS: A conservative blog known for publishing inaccurate articles posted a story November 10 falsely claiming that Albert Bourla’s wife had died and her cause of death was listed as “complications from the Pfizer vaccine.” There is no truth to these assertions. Pfizer spokesperson Amy Rose told The Associated Press that Myriam Bourla is “alive and well.” Rose called the incorrect claims “lies” meant to undermine public confidence in the company’s COVID-19 vaccine, and also accused the author of the article of “deliberately and maliciously attempting to cause emotional distress to the Bourla family.” The blog, The Conservative Beaver, did not provide any evidence for its claims and attributed some information to an unnamed doctor. The article also incorrectly stated that Myriam Bourla had “expressed skepticism with her husband’s experimental injection” and initially refused to take it. That claim is also false. The article took a months-old quote from Myriam Bourla out of context to support the inaccurate statement. In a February 4 interview with the local news outlet Scarsdale 10583, Bourla, then 48, said she was “very proud” of her husband’s work in developing the vaccine, but that she had not received it yet because it was not her turn. Her stance was in accordance with vaccination guidance at the time, which prioritized essential workers, older adults and those at highest risk of experiencing severe complications from the virus. The Conservative Beaver did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a separate blog post this month, the same site also falsely alleged that Albert Bourla had been arrested by the FBI and charged with fraud. Pfizer refuted the claim, and the FBI said it had no knowledge of such a case.

Woman was Removed from Hockey Game for Her Actions, not Her Shirt

CLAIM: A video shows that a spectator was removed from a Wichita Thunder hockey game because she was wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the text “Let’s Go Brandon.”

THE FACTS: The woman was escorted out of the arena because she continued to use inappropriate language and gestures after multiple warnings, not because of the message on her clothing, the Wichita Thunder hockey team said in a November 8 statement. In a video clip that circulated online, the woman is dressed in a gray sweatshirt featuring the message “Let’s Go Brandon,” a coded phrase that has become a rallying cry for some critics of President Joe Biden. The video shows the woman talking with security officials at Wichita’s InTrust Bank Arena before they escort her from her seat and toward the arena’s exit during a home game November 5. “Woman getting kicked for wearing ‘let’s go Brandon’ shirt,” reads text overlaid on the video. However, this caption misrepresents what actually happened. “This individual was removed by arena security after multiple warnings, because she was using extremely profane language and gestures toward our staff and those around her,” the Wichita Thunder’s statement said. “She clearly was not kicked out because of her sweatshirt as the rest of her party, also wearing the same sweatshirts, were not removed and remained at the game until its conclusion.” The team’s statement added that it aims to create a “family-friendly environment” and removes individuals who do not follow the guidelines of the arena and the ECHL, the AA level professional league to which the team belongs.

Dutch Event did not Block Unvaccinated from Seeing Santa

CLAIM: Authorities in the city of Zwolle, Netherlands, erected a high fence so that unvaccinated parents and their children could not see the arrival of Santa Claus at a Christmas event.

THE FACTS: The Christmas event was open to anyone regardless of vaccination status and the fence was erected for security reasons, according to Zwolle city officials. Social media users shared a video that shows parents shouting as officials erect a fence. Several widely shared tweets falsely claimed the clip showed that officials were stopping children whose parents hadn’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 from seeing the arrival of Sinterklaas, the Dutch name for Santa Claus. Another post showed a photo of a child looking through the fence, claiming she was not allowed inside the Zwolle event because “her parents are unvaccinated.” However, the event was not closed to the unvaccinated, just to those without tickets, officials told The Associated Press. At the yearly celebration organized by Stichting Evenementen Zwolle, a nonprofit that hosts festivals in the city, Santa arrives by boat in a canal followed by a reception on the town square. This year’s event was blocked off by a fence, but had space for 5,000 people who could reserve a ticket showing they were either vaccinated or had a negative COVID test result, said Sam Rademaker, Zwolle municipality spokesperson. “For security reasons we (the municipality) had agreed to erect blinded fences around the square and canal, as a part of crowd management and to make sure the visitors weren’t gathering next to a nearby busy road,” Rademaker said in an email. The commotion caught on the video took place as parents gathered to watch Santa’s arrival along an unfenced section of the canal, and officials then came and erected the barrier. “In short: no, the fences weren’t placed to keep unvaccinated individuals apart from the festivities,” Rademaker said. Zwolle Mayor Peter Snijders addressed the controversy on Facebook, reiterating that everybody, unvaccinated or vaccinated, was allowed to attend. “The fences were intended to guide visitors and to prevent crowds of viewers forming,” he said. “Not to block (unvaccinated) parents and children. We are sorry if that impression was created.”

Post Falsely Claims that Kyle Rittenhouse’s Mother Drove Him to Kenosha

CLAIM: Kyle Rittenhouse’s mother, Wendy Rittenhouse, drove him across state lines and dropped him off at the protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with a rifle on the night he shot three people in August 2020.

THE FACTS: According to unchallenged testimony in Rittenhouse’s murder trial, he drove himself to Kenosha the day before the shootings and spent the night at a friend’s house. As Rittenhouse’s trial reached a conclusion Monday, a social media post circulated that incorrectly stated: “Why are we just glazing over the fact that Kyle Rittenhouse’s mother put her minor child in a vehicle, drove him across state lines and dropped him off in the middle of a riot armed with an assault rifle? Why is she not behind bars?” But Rittenhouse testified in Kenosha County Circuit Court on November 10 that he drove himself to Kenosha on August 24, 2020, the day before the shooting, to work at his job at the RecPlex in nearby Pleasant Prairie, according to footage of the court proceedings reviewed by The Associated Press. After work, he drove his car to his friend Dominick Black’s house in Kenosha, where he spent the night. Rittenhouse was charged for using an AR-style semi-automatic rifle to kill two men and wound a third during a night of protests that erupted in Kenosha over the wounding of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by a white Kenosha police officer. The case went to the jury. Under questioning by Thomas Binger, a Kenosha County prosecutor, Rittenhouse said that he had driven to Kenosha from Antioch despite not having his driver’s license. Rittenhouse testified that the next day, August 25, 2020, he rode with Black to downtown Kenosha. When Black testified in court on November 2, he gave a similar account. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune in November 2020, Wendy Rittenhouse said she didn’t know what her son was doing on the night of the shootings. Attorneys representing Kyle Rittenhouse did not respond to the AP’s requests for comment.

N.Y.C. COPS FIND RESPECT, WARM WELCOME, MORE MONEY IN FLORIDA:

More than a dozen NYPD cops have ditched the Big Apple to join the force in a small Florida city – part of a nationwide trend of disgruntled officers finding greener pastures in pro-police communities. Lakeland – a community of 108,000 people 35 miles east of Tampa – mounted a social media campaign targeting N.Y.C. cops earlier this year, and in April dispatched a delegation to recruit in Times Square. Fourteen former Finest moved to Lakeland in the past year – 12 of them wooed over the past two months thanks to the recruiting trip. The respect accorded cops in Florida “was an eye opener,” former NYPD cop Matthew Spoto said at a September press conference after heeding Lakeland’s call of duty. In New York, “it was almost like I was ashamed to be a law enforcement officer,” he said.

DEA Stopped Saying ‘Mexican Cartel’ to ‘Appease’ Mexico, Recently Retired Agency Officials Say:

The directive for Drug Enforcement Administration officials to not use the term “Mexican cartel” came directly from the Biden administration to ease relations with the Mexican government, two recently retired DEA officials told the Daily Caller News Foundation. The DCNF exclusively obtained an email in August that instructed DEA officials to “now avoid saying ‘Mexican cartel’” when speaking with the media. The email was sent as drugs continued to surge across the U.S.-Mexico border. One recently retired DEA official told the DCNF that when the new administration came in, the Department of Justice (DOJ) required DEA to submit news interview requests for approval. The retired official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the DOJ declined many of the national news requests on top of the language guidance, but eventually eased up and allowed some to do local interviews where he used the term “Mexican drug cartel” and called each by its name.

University in England Trains Students in Sex Work:

The student’s union of Durham University in England promoted a sex work training course offered by the university in an email to all students and staff. “The SU position on students in sex work are [sic] clear: support, informed advice, de-stigmatisation and collaboration with expert organizations,” read the email. The university brought in the external “Students Involved in the Adult Sex Industry” session in response to student requests, a spokesperson for Durham University told the Daily Caller News Foundation. The spokesperson also said sex work is a “feature” within higher education “across the U.K.”

“We are emphatically not seeking to encourage sex work, but we are seeking to provide support to our students,” the spokesperson said. “We make no apologies for working to ensure that Durham is a safe environment for all of our students and staff. “A sex work course reportedly offered over video conference exists to “support students in a difficulty arising from the reality of rising costs in higher education,” according to student union welfare and liberation officer, Jonah Graham, The Times reported. “Trying to create a scandal from an attempt to support people whose work can make them vulnerable is contemptible.”

The FBI’s Email System was Hacked to Send out Fake Cybersecurity Warnings:

Hackers targeted the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) email servers, sending out thousands of phony messages that say its recipients have become the victims of a “sophisticated chain attack,” first reported by Bleeping Computer. The emails were initially uncovered by The Spamhaus Project, a nonprofit organization that investigates email spammers. The emails claim that Vinny Troia was behind the fake attacks and also falsely state that Troia is associated with the infamous hacking group, The Dark Overlord – the same bad actors who leaked the fifth season of Orange Is the New Black. Auschwitz Tattoo-Kit Auction Fuels Debate in Israel:

An Israeli court has halted the auction of a rare set of tattoo needles that had purportedly been used to mark inmates at Auschwitz and had reignited a debate over whether Nazi-era artifacts should be bought or sold. Comprising eight metal blocks affixed with needles arranged in the shape of numerals, the tattoo kit had been scheduled to be sold on November 9. It was expected to fetch between $30,000 and $40,000, according to the online site of broker Meir Zolman, whose Jerusalem-based auction house was running the sale. A court in Tel Aviv issued a temporary injunction on the auction Wednesday after The Center Organizations of Holocaust Survivors said the private purchase of the tattoo set would undermine efforts to shed light on the horrors committed in death camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau.

CRT Opponents Win Big in School Board Elections Across America:

Candidates opposed to the teaching of critical race theory in public schools won school board elections across the United States in recent elections. The victories ranged from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where the conservative education advocacy group 1776 Project PAC claimed victory in three races in a Twitter post, to the Spokane-area Central Valley School District, where the Spokane Spokesman-Review reported that Pam Orebaugh, whose campaign site expressed opposition to CRT, turned back a write-in challenger. CRT holds that America is fundamentally racist, yet teaches people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race, and whose adherents pursue “antiracism” through the end of merit, objective truth and the adoption of race-based policies. “Yesterday’s election demonstrates that parents are willing and able to cut through school officials’ jargon and gaslighting – and that they will absolutely exercise control over their children’s education, whether politicians want them involved or not,” Parents Defending Education President and Founder Nicole Neily said in a statement. “The vast majority of American families oppose students being taught to view themselves and others through the lens of identity politics – and this trend is not going away.”

Abortions Fell by Half in Month After New Texas Law:

In September, after Texas enacted the most restrictive abortion ban in the nation, the number of legal abortions performed there dropped 50% from the same month in 2020, according to data released Friday by a group of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. The Texas law bans abortions after cardiac activity can be detected, which is generally when women are around six weeks pregnant. No prior Texas abortion restriction has been followed by a drop so steep. But it is also smaller than many experts predicted. Before the ban, 84% of people seeking abortions in Texas were more than six weeks pregnant at their appointment, according to previous research from the same group, the Texas Policy Evaluation Project. It evaluates the effect of Texas legislation on reproductive health and has been independently tallying abortions in the state since 2017. “It’s one data point in a further downward slide,” Kari White, the project’s principal investigator, said of the September numbers, which cover roughly 93% of total abortions in the state. “I would expect we’ll see the number decrease in subsequent months.”

Study Shows COVID Vaccine Is Better Than ‘Natural Immunity’:

The concept of “natural immunity” has been a rallying cry for anti-vaxxers – but a new study released by the CDC shows that the vaccine is more protective than a previous coronavirus infection. In fact, those who did not get vaccinated but had recently contracted the virus were five times more likely to be reinfected than people who had not been infected before they got the shot. “The data demonstrate that vaccination can provide a higher, more robust, and more consistent level of immunity to protect people from hospitalization for COVID-19 than infection alone for at least 6 months,” the CDC said.

Examiner – (Notable) Remarks:

•• Condoleezza Rice, the first Black female secretary of state, who now heads Stanford University’s Hoover Institution – and who, by her account, attended segregated schools in the Deep South – was a guest last week on “The View.” When asked about the critical race theory debate, she said, “One of the worries that I have about the way that we’re talking about race” sometimes these days is that “somehow white people now have to feel guilty for everything that happened in the past.” She added, “I don’t think that’s very productive.” Of course, as she and we know, there’s more to the critical race theory debate than that. But about the strain of educational philosophy that looks to raise students’ awareness of racial injustice, she said that for Black kids to be empowered, “I don’t have to make white kids feel bad for being white.” Writing for The Grio, the longtime cultural critic Touré offered a piercing reply, calling Rice a “soldier for white supremacy” and saying that white people today, including children, “should cringe at what their ancestors did.” If school curriculums include the harshest aspects of America’s history, he argued, “I really don’t care if learning this makes white kids feel bad – and if it doesn’t, then they are too heartless.” I’m with Secretary Rice. Especially because people can actively foster change without harboring (or performing?) a sense of personal guilt for America’s history. Black America likely will not overcome without some white assistance. But I’m not convinced that the way this happens is with white people’s cheeks burning in shame over their complicity. Maybe they can just help. —- John McWhorter

** Wokeness operates as if there had been no civil rights movement, and that white Americans hadn’t been an integral part of it. It operates as if 60 years of affirmative action never happened, and that an ever-growing percentage of Black Americans don’t belong to the middle and upper class (and that they are, incidentally, concentrated in the American South). It operates as if we didn’t twice elect a Black president and recently bury a Black general as an American icon. It operates as if, in city after city, American police forces aren’t led by Black police chiefs and staffed by officers of diverse backgrounds. It operates as if white supremacy is still being systemically enforced, while ignoring the fact that a previously marginalized ethnic minority, namely Asian Americans, enjoys higher income levels than white Americans. —- Bret Stephens

Sam Asghari is More Than Mr. Britney Spears:

A nascent actor and erstwhile personal trainer, the 27-year-old met his fiancée in 2016 when he appeared with her in a music video. They announced their engagement on Instagram in September – one of few details about Spears’ private life that is public knowledge. He’s since spoken out about the conservatorship that has veiled her recent history. But none of his posts satisfied onlookers’ most pressing curiosities: Who is Mr. Asghari? What is his life like?

** In September, the last month for which city data is available, there were 50% fewer cabs operating than before the pandemic, and the industry made 52% less revenue.

** One of the central findings in a recent investigation into the role of traffic stops in American policing is just how important traffic tickets are to the budgets of many towns and police departments. In Washington, D.C., in 1916, less than 10 years after the first car was registered, traffic tickets were the third most common citation in city court, adding thousands of dollars to the “Police Relief Fund.” Citing the growing numbers of cars and a rise in serious crashes, the D.C. police that year sought to add more officers, reflecting a nationwide trend that would continue for decades. Across the country, surging revenue from tickets helped police forces expand. In Los Angeles, tickets funded additional officers and paid for nearly all of its traffic division, according to the department’s 1920 annual report. Meanwhile, police powers on the roadways expanded with a Prohibition-era Supreme Court ruling upholding a warrantless search that turned up bottles of liquor hidden in an Oldsmobile Roadster. That 1925 court decision establishing an “automobile exception” to Constitutional privacy protections that critics say has contributed to the sometimes abusive over-policing of traffic laws.
