*CHARMING – San Francisco —
Where Drug Addicts Outnumber High School Students:

San Francisco has more drug addicts than it has students enrolled in its public high schools, the city Health Department’s latest estimates conclude. There are about 24,500 injection drug users in San Francisco — that’s about 8,500 more people than the nearly 16,000 students enrolled in San Francisco Unified School District’s 15 high schools and illustrates the scope of the problem on the city’s streets.

It’s also an increase of about 2,000 serious drug users since 2012, the last time a study was done.

*New Study: Voter ID Laws Have No Measurable Impact on Voting Behavior:

Less than one week after Georgia Democrat Stacey Abramsmade inflammatory claims in her State of the Union response about an epidemic of “voter suppression” jeopardizing the character of our nation, the National Bureau of Economic Research released a study that demonstrates once again that voter ID laws have no measurable impact on voting behavior. In other words, voter ID laws don’t “suppress” anyone’s vote.

This latest study echoes the conclusion of others, including a landmark report by The Heritage Foundation in 2007 finding that voter ID laws don’t reduce voter turnout, including among African-Americans and Hispanics. These voters were just as likely to vote in states requiring photo identification as in those that don’t.

Researchers for the National Bureau of Economic Research found that between 2008 and 2016, voter ID laws had “no negative effect on registration or turnout, overall or for any specific group defined by race, gender, age or party affiliation.” he new study also concluded that these results “cannot be attributed to mobilization against the laws,” contradicting critics who say election turnout has been sustained only by such campaigns.

*Sen. Cory Booker Plans for Government to Give $46,215 to All 18-Year-Olds in ‘Lowest Income Bracket’:

Sen. Cory Booker (D.-N.J.) is proposing a plan—the American Opportunity Accounts Act—that he calculates will provide $46,215 to every 18-year-old in the lowest income bracket by giving them annual subsidies in a federally managed savings account. Booker cited his plan in a Tweet he sent out this week.

“We must close the wealth gap that’s undermining equal opportunity in our country,” Booker said in his Tweet. “My baby bonds will help level the playing field by creating a savings account for every U.S. child—to invest in themselves through things like paying for higher education.” Booker’s Tweet retweeted an article tweeted by prosperitynow.org. The article was headlined: “Cory Booker’s America Opportunity Accounts Act is a Bold Step Towards Wealth Equality.”

 *Farrakhan: ‘The Wicked Jews
Want to Use Me to Break Up the Women’s Movement’:

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan on Sunday spoke in defense of Women’s March national leaders who have taken flak for associating with him, and launched fresh attacks on Jews. “The wicked Jews want to use me to break up the women’s movement,” Farrakhan said at his movement’s Saviours’ Day conference in Chicago, praising by name the national co-leaders of the Women’s March, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour and Carmen Perez.

In a lengthy speech, Farrakhan also accused Jews of putting Jewish suffering – specifically the Nazis’ systematic extermination of six million Jews, the Holocaust – ahead of that of others because they believe “only their life is sacred.” Farrakhan’s statements about Jews have long been provocative, but over the past year Mallory, Sarsour and Perez have been widely condemned for associating with him, threatening to fracture the movement.

Mallory was on the stage during last year’s Saviours’ Day speech, when Farrakhan drew attention to her presence. In that same speech, he declared that “the powerful Jews are my enemy.”

*Texas AG Claims Nearly 60,000 Non-Citizens Voted in State Elections Over Last Two Decades:

Texas officials are claiming that 58,000 non-citizens voted in one or more state elections from 1996 onward, according to reports. The Texas Department of Public Safety, which identified these voters, also said there are 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote in the state, NBC 5 Dallas-Forth Worthreported. “Texas law allows lawfully present noncitizens to obtain driver’s licenses by showing proof of lawful presence to DPS,” said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton‘s office in a statement, noting it planned to launch an investigation into the voter rolls.

“However, only citizens are eligible to vote. And Texas law currently does not require verification of a voter’s statement that they are a citizen.” The Texas AG prosecuted 97 people for alleged voting fraud violations between 2005 and 2017.  Last year, Paxton’s Election Fraud Unit prosecuted 33 people on 97 election fraud violations, NBC 5 notes.

*Drew Barrymore: I’d Be ‘Dead Really Soon’ if I Tried Heroin:

Drew Barrymore isn’t afraid to talk about her troubled past and how it affects her presently. “I have an extremely addictive personality,” Drew told Glamour UK. “I’ve never done heroin, and I don’t want to get plastic surgery because I feel like they’re both very slippery slopes.”

The 43-year-old Flower Beauty founder knows that both, while vastly different things, could destroy her. “I feel if I try either,” she shared, “I’m going to be dead really soon.”

The “Santa Clarita Diet” star has been candid about her childhood drug use and rehab stays, turning to alcohol and smoking when she was just 9 years old. By the time she was 12, Barrymore was a cocaine addict. She was in and out of rehab in her early teenage years and was even institutionalized following a suicide attempt.

*EXAMINER–COMMENTARY by David Brooks:
I’ve always thought Americans would come together when we realized that we faced a dangerous foreign foe. And lo and behold, now we have one: China. It’s become increasingly clear that China is a grave economic, technological and intellectual threat to the United States and the world order.

And sure enough, beneath the TV bluster of daily politics, Americans are beginning to join together. Mike Pence andElizabeth Warren can sound shockingly similar when talking about China’s economic policy. Nancy Pelosi and Republicans sound shockingly similar when they talk about Chinese human rights abuses. Conservative and liberal policy thinkers can sound shockingly similar when they start talking about how to respond to the challenge from China.

*EXAMINER–COMMENTARY by Jordan Ruimy:
The problem with the upcoming HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland” is that two proven liars are the sources here, which makes the doc feel like a hit piece rather than any kind of artistic statement.

The allegations against Michael Jackson have already been scrutinized to no end. Remember the media frenzy that Martin Bashir’s 20/20 interview with a victim caused in the mid-’90s? It happened again the following decade, which resulted in Jackson’s home being raided by FBI officers, in two unannounced raids, but nothing incriminating being found. Jackson was acquitted of all charges in 2005 by a Californiajury. The FBI, likewise, “conducted a thorough investigation. Its 300-page file on the pop star, released under the Freedom of Information Act, found no evidence of wrongdoing.”

Michael Jackson was, and still is, a well-loved musician, who was also a terrible judge of character, and a naive fool. He spent the better part of his large extravagant life trusting some of the shadiest characters imaginable. He made extremely bad choices because he had lost touch with the way of life of the normal people and had no idea that his friendships with young people (by the way, it wasn’t only boys, there were lots of girls too, but none of their parents ever sued or blackmailed him) may be seen as sinister. I believe that he really didn’t get it.

*EXAMINER–COMMENTARY by Adam Grant:
I’m really sorry I didn’t say hi, make eye contact or acknowledge your presence in any way when you waved to me in the hallway the other day. It’s nothing personal. I just have too many people trying to greet me these days, and I can’t respond to everyone.

That sounds ridiculous, right? You would never snub a colleague trying to strike up a conversation. Yet when you ignore a personal email, that’s exactly what you’ve done: digital snubbery.

Yes, we’re all overwhelmed with email. One recent survey suggested that the average American’s inbox has 199 unread messages. But volume isn’t an excuse for not replying. Ignoring email is an act of incivility.

“I’m too busy to answer your email” really means “Your email is not a priority for me right now.” That’s a popular justification for neglecting your inbox: It’s full of other people’s priorities. But there’s a growing body of evidence that if you care about being good at your job, your inbox should be a priority.
